Stuff the Turkey, it’s Chepstow that get’s the Christmas Crown
For some the Christmas racing highlight might be the King George but for DragonBet and the Lovell family it’s always been Chepstow that really sets the pulses racing.
Get your Jumpers on Proper Racing is back
Just over a week ago Chepstow saw the return of the NH season and the Jump Season Opener across the Big Welsh Racing weekend.
Croeso - The Dying of the Light
As the seasons change and the long summer fades, there seems to be a sense of foreboding about the likely tough economic months ahead. It would be easy to get swept up in the anxiety of the Nation and fear what’s coming but there’s also reason for some welcome.
Choc Ices and Stakes - The language of the Betting Ring
Growing up around Betting Rings is a life I’ve loved. It’s a way of living that is out of the ordinary. There’s a mystique to it’s inner workings, one that even technology hasn’t been able to fully sanitise.
To Wage-err is Human
One of the most common responses when I tell people that I’m a bookie is “You won’t get rich off me, I never gamble.“ (The truth is it’s not my sole aim to get rich off the people who do, but I am trying to increase my wealth and in the mean time build a sustainable business.)
I Predict A Riot! My day at Chepstow
I had a lovely time at Chepstow yesterday. The Welsh sun was blazing and it was clear from the queue at the entrance that a decent mid-week crowd was gathering. I got to meet Miss Wales 2022, caught up with Scott Quinell, was introduced to the Welsh Minister for Sport, got interviewed on sky sports and did my cobblers in!!
DragonBet – A Journey Soon To Begin…
When the pandemic hit we all had a chance to stop, think and re-assess. For myself and my brother it brought us to the next chapter of our bookmaking and punting journey. It’s been a wild ride and a learning curve like no other. One that’s already given us waves of anxiety, hope and excitement.
Keep It Social and It’ll Sell Itself
This week Great British racing announced a 1.6 Million pound marketing drive under the banner ‘Everyone’s Turf’. The scheme is said to be squarely aimed at the youth market with the revelation that there’s an increased openness for people between the age of 25-34 years old to come racing.
Caught between a rock and an extra place…
The betting ring was once described as a jungle. Times have changed and very often now it’s more a mill pond than anything else.
Dunraven Bowl night at Chepstow Racecourse
Welsh racing is having a season like no other and the reason being is the rich breeding ground of the Welsh point to points.
NH racing = No Hope racing
My old man became a bookmaker after a bad night at the dog track that used to encircle the Cardiff Arms Park rugby pitch. He’d lost every penny he had (bet responsibly guys) and on the way home called into a pub to borrow a few quid off a friend to get him through the next week.
Education is expensive in this game
You win some, you lose some. Today I lost some.I was always told that when it doesn’t hurt it’s time to give up. Today it hurt – not because of how much I lost but it’s the manner in which I lost it.
“No I don’t take NUS and neither should you!!”

The Sinking ARC
Horse racing is a complex sport, it shouldn’t be but it is. At its centre it’s just animals running around in a field. That in itself isn’t very interesting but it’s the foundation. The interest builds when you can bet on it.
High Hopes & Low Profits – 6 Nations race day at Chepstow
Rugby is always going to come first in Wales and especially when it’s a game against the old enemy, so I was glad to see that Chepstow were trying to embrace it, rather than compete with it by offering £10 tickets and a fan zone to watch the match after the racing.
Chepstow – Mega bets and Mullets
The sun was shining, the six nations starts tomorrow, life seems to be getting back on track and so are we (a Welsh racetrack that is.)
The Joys Of Bookmaking
With welcome news that crowds can now attend sports events in Wales my mind has turned to Ffos Las on the 1st of February and how much I’m looking forward to it.
A gathering cloud…
Being a bookmaker you don’t expect to be on the top of many peoples Christmas lists or indeed receive any sympathy when things go wrong but things going wrong could be on the horizon…
The Game is not gone…
Ask any of my colleagues about the golden age of on-course bookmaking and you’ll get a host of different answers. The common denominator will be that it was just before they got involved in the game. “It’s not like it was,” “the games gone son,” “business was so good they used to refuse any bet under £10.”
Back Pointing… Llangeinor Pentrych at Dunraven Stud
It’s been a long time, 693 days to be exact, since a point to point was held in Wales. It was cold, it was wet, it was windy, it was as muddy as a Glastonbury festival and I bloody loved it!!
Thanks for visiting my blog page. I'm an independent bookmaker that has spent his whole life surrounded by the ups and downs of gambling. I've travelled the turf from a young age following in my father's footsteps from the muddy point to point fields of Wales to taking bets at Ascot on the rails.
I graduated from University with a degree in Economics and Gambling and have been elected as a Director of the National Association of Bookmakers. I hope that by reading my blog you can join me on my gambling journey from the racecourses, onto the launch of a new betting site Dragonbet.co.uk and everywhere in-between.
It'll include personal triumphs, some disasters (hopefully not many) and lots of opinions- you might even agree with a few of them.
So once again Diolch for visiting pob lwc and enjoy the ride.
Diolch - James.
